A Negroni Sbagliato is a beautiful thing. Essentially a Negroni Spritz, it’s a refreshing sip that’s bitter, bracing and bubbly. The gin in the classic Negroni is swapped with prosecco for a bubbly take on the three-ingredient cocktail.

Sbgaliato (pronounced Spa-lee-ato ) means mistaken or broken in Italian and the Negroni Sbgaliato was just that, or so the story goes. at bar was mixing up a Negroni for a guest and meant to reach for the gin, but instead accidentally grabbed some sparkling wine. This accident was a hit and has became a modern classic. Even Rhaenyra Targaryen loves to sip a Sbgaliato, or at least the actress Emma D’arcy who plays the character does. If you haven’t heard the clip, you’ll want to listen to it here. Can you say swooooon? I just want them to say a “Negroni, Sbagliato, with Prosecco in it” to me every time I make one.

What’s In A Negroni Sbagliato

Campari– The original bitter component of a Negroni, this amaro is intensely astringent and orange flavored with herbal botanicals and roots. It contains many herbs and has a characteristic redish orange hue that adds a vibrant color to any cocktail.Vermouth– the fortified wine used in Negronis is usually sweet vermouth, to help balance the bitter Campari and boozy gin. In the Negroni Sbagliato, it adds a I like to switch it up and use white bianco vermouth or my absolute favorite vermouth- Mommen Pop’s Blood Orange vermouth/aperitif wine that I am using hereProsecco– this is where the “mistake” comes in with the Negroni variation. Swiapping the gin with prosecco, or other sparkling wine, turns the Nergoni into a session-able spritz that’s fit for even a future queen

I am always making note of cocktails that easily pair with food, and the Sbagliato is a perfect along side food. When it comes to pairing, the Sbagliato is equally as stunning in the summer sipped with tomatoes and melon as it is paired with hearty meat or root vegetable focused dishes in the winter.

Grab your Campari, vermouth and prosecco because we are making a Negroni Sbagliato. It’s stunning! Essentially a Negroni Spritz, the gin is swapped with prosecco for a bubbly take on the classic 3 ingredient, equal-parts cocktail.

Ingredients

1.5 oz Campari
1.5 oz red sweet vermouth- I’m using  Mommen Pop’s Blood Orange vermouth
1.5 oz prosecco or dry sparkling wine

Instructions

Add ice to a rocks or footed glass.
Pour in Campari and vermouth.
Top with prosecco and stir.
Garnish with orange slice.
optional: flamed orange peel*

Notes

*flame orange peel over cocktail by taking a match  and expressing oils of an orange peel through the flame over the cocktail
Mommen Pop’s Blood Orange vermouth makes a phenomenal Sbagliato. It has a deep orange flavor with a hint of pepper. But use what you love or can find. Martini & Rossi’s sweet vermouth is classic and easy to find.
